Headline: NASA Space Telescope Discovers Largest Ring Around Saturn

PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has discovered an enormous ring around Saturn -- by far the largest of the giant planet's many rings.

The new belt lies at the far reaches of the Saturnian system, with an orbit tilted 27 degrees from the main ring plane. The bulk of its material starts about six million kilometers (3.7 million miles) away from the planet and extends outward roughly another 12 million kilometers (7.4 million miles). One of Saturn's farthest moons, Phoebe, circles within the newfound ring, and is likely the source of its material.

Headline: Can People Go to Mars?

Space radiation between Earth and Mars poses a hazard to astronauts. How dangerous is it out there? NASA scientists are working to find out.

"It's a question of radiation," says Frank Cucinotta of NASA's Space Radiation Health Project at the Johnson Space Center. "We know how much radiation is out there, waiting for us between Earth and Mars, but we're not sure how the human body is going to react to it."

Headline: Astrogeologists discover shallow caves that could provide shelter for life on Mars

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - Scientists have found ample evidence of one of the necessary elements for life on the Red Planet - water - but astrogeologists have discovered more evidence of another necessary element: shelter.

Astrogeologists from the U.S. Geological Survey recently found evidence of a cave system formed by lava flows just under Mars' surface.

Caves like these that could hold clues to whether life existed on the planet and could shelter future human explorers on Mars, according to Glen Cushing, a USGS physicist.

"Caves pretty much have a pristine environment that's not affected by what goes on up on the surface," Cushing said. "Future explorers would be able to take advantage of this."

Headline: Panel calls for big detour in NASA's moon plans

NASA needs to make a major detour in its effort to return astronauts to the moon, a special independent panel told the White House Thursday.

Under current plans, NASA has picked the wrong destination with the wrong rocket, the panel's chairman said. A test-flight version of the rocket, the new Ares I, is on a launch pad at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, awaiting liftoff next week for its first experimental flight.

Headline: Choosing Your First Telescope

So you've decided to take the plunge and get a telescope. Congratulations! That alone is a big step. But what comes next? Not an impulsive shopping trip to the nearest mall! Buying a telescope is very different than buying a television, and department-store salespeople rarely understand what amateur astronomers need.

Rule Number One: shun the flimsy, semi-toy, "500 power!" department-store scopes that may have caught your eye. The telescope you want has two essentials: high-quality optics and a steady, smoothly working mount. You may also want the telescope to be nice and large, but don't forget portability and convenience. Your first telescope shouldn't be so awkward heavy that you can't tote it outdoors, set it up, and take it down reasonably easily.

Headline: Nasa unveils Ares 1-X rocket amid doubts over future funding

Space agency goes ahead with demonstration despite concerns that it lacks cash to achieve a return to the moon...

The US space agency, Nasa, has rolled out a demonstration version of its new rocket, the Ares 1-X, even though proposals have been put to the White House to scrap the launcher. The slender, 100 metre-high rocket was moved in a delicate, slow operation from its 52-storey assembly hangar at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida this morning to a launch pad about four miles away.

Headline: Asteroid explosion over Indonesia raises fears about Earth's defences

An asteroid that exploded in the Earth’s atmosphere with the energy of three Hiroshima bombs this month has reignited fears about our planet’s defences against space impacts.

On 8 October, the rock crashed into the atmosphere above South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The blast was heard by monitoring stations 10,000 miles away, according to a report by scientists at the University of Western Ontario.

Headline: 99 percent pure water ice found on Mars

Washington, September 25 (ANI): NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has revealed sub-surface water ice that may be 99 percent pure, halfway between the North Pole and the equator on the Red Planet.

“We knew there was ice below the surface at high latitudes of Mars, but we find that it extends far closer to the equator than you would think, based on Mars’ climate today,” said Shane Byrne of the University of Arizona, a member of the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment, or HiRISE, which runs the high-resolution camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Nasa plans on bombing the moon!?!

This Friday NASA is preparing to bomb the moon...yes, you heard me correctly. NASA is going to bomb the moon, and to top that, they are going to broadcast it live.

The impact will be so powerful that it will eject a huge plume of debris that can be seen on Earth. NASA plans to air the whole event starting at 6:15 am EDT on Oct.9th on NASA TV www.nasa.gov. A Centaur missile will hit a crater close to the southern pole at twice the speed of a bullet.

Does this sound OK to any of you? Who really thinks that bombing the moon is a good idea? You know, every day I read something that makes me think the world has lost its mind.

I understand that there may be water and/or other (rare) elements etc... on the moon, but this just seems bizarre. If there is a God this is sure to be one of those self-exalting human moments of stupidity that is sure to raise a heavenly eyebrow.
